Problem Solving Labs Program Teaching Critical Thinking

Summary for â€Å"THE NJCU-UMDNJ SOCIAL PROBLEM SOLVING LABS PROGRAM: Teaching Critical Thinking in the Jersey City Public Schools† This program was designed to teach children about improving and using their critical thinking skills not only in their schoolwork, but also in their own personal lives and scenarios (e.g., conflict resolution, drug use, and violent behavior). The NJCU-UMDNJ (New Jersey City University – University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) is a collaboration between these two universities where NJCU undergraduate students with some staff and clinicians from UMDNJ work together along with some advanced psychology doctoral students from Rutgers University in special labs (SPSL, a.k.a, The Social Problem Solving Labs). Teachers and administrators from several Jersey City Public Schools send children to the labs if they are experiencing certain problems within the schools. The lab focuses on teaching the children how to alter the thought process, by focusing on critical thinking skills, which lead to the maladaptive behaviors. These activities in the labs had various critical thin king exercises (e.g., considering consequences of actions and generating alternative behaviors) that were designed so each student could think of a plan of action and a way to solve the problem.
